Why Sports Betting May Not Make Business Sense For Many Tribal Casinos by Dave Palermo

The diversity of the nation's American Indian casino markets, regulatory issues and low profit margins would likely limit sports betting to the more lucrative, urban tribal gambling operations, experts predict.

Stand-alone sportsbooks or wagering activities integrated into bar and restaurant facilities could be limited to fewer than 100 of the approximately 480 tribal gambling operations in 28 states.

That is, if the US Supreme Court rules the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) to be unconstitutional. The court will hear arguments on the issue in December.
