If Chuck Cooper is indeed chosen as the U.S. Solicitor General nominee by President Trump, New Jersey sports betting backers - and opponents - will look keenly at his legal history.
That’s because, as I reported last week, the U.S. Supreme Court recently took the unusual step of asking the Solicitor General’s office for its opinion on the merits of taking up the case. In the last 20 cases over the past year when that has happened, the top court has taken the Solicitor General’s advice each time – 10 times taking the case as suggested, and 10 times declining, also as suggested.
